In “The Secret Life of Bees”, Sue Monk Kidd writes about 13 year old Lily on her journey to find answers about her mother and get away from life at home with her father, T Ray. Set in 1964, Lily escapes to Tiburon, South Carolina with her good “servant” and best friend, Rosaleen. They are taken in by three black and spirited beekeeping sisters. By combining their knowledge, Lily is able to push back the curtain of confusion and guilt over that vague memory of her mother’s death by entering the sister’s world of the Black Madonna, humming bees, and colorless love and recover the emptiness that followed that afternoon in her mother’s room. Though she lives under the constant cloud of fear of being found and taken home, safety, love and beauty ease her mind and heart in this stunning story.

This novel will have you flipping one page after the next easily. With Sue Monk Kidd’s original and compelling style, her first novel will find a place in your heart as well as on your shelf. It’s an effulgent story, guaranteed to drop a jaw, spark a laugh and even grace a tear to your eye.
