The Darkest Hour is the true story of Winston Churchill (played by Gary Oldman) who becomes the newly appointed British Prime Minister during a time of crisis with the German Army invading Western Europe. Churchill has many within his own country that are out to get him including King George VI (played by Ben Mendelsohn). As days go by, the German Army keeps encroaching on the British forces in Western Europe and hope seems lost for a rescue. So it’s up to Churchill to find a solution to save the British forces from the wrath of the German Army.
The Darkest Hour is an intriguing biography pick about a time of history when everything seemed lost. Gary Oldman is terrific as Winston Churchill, who he portrays as a stubborn man that has to face a tough situation where there is no easy answers. The film does a great job showing the peril that Great Britain was enduring during World War 2 and the tense emotions of the British parliament. The sets and costumes are detailed and look like they are from that period in time. The weakness of the film is that there is very little dialogue and action. The Darkest Hour gets 9/10 stars.
