Cabin in the Woods (2012) is a horror parody where 4 teens; Dana (played by Kristen Connolly) the virgin, Curt (played by Chris Hemsworth) the philosopher jock, Jules (played by Anna Hutchison) the slutty one, Marty (played by Fran Kranz) the stoner, and Holden (played by Jesse Williams) Curt’s friend, go up to Curt’s cabin for the weekend. When the teens get there something doesn’t feel right, for the cellar door suddenly opens. The teens go exploring and find the old relics of the former owners of the cabin. Dana starts reading from the diary of the past owner’s daughter and ends up awaking the zombie corpses of the former owners. The cabin is attacked and the kids hide in their rooms, which leads to Marty finding a hidden camera in his room. This leads him to think that there’s someone or thing behind the attack. So it’s up to the teens to survive against the zombies and find out who or what is behind the attack.
Cabin in the Woods (2012) is an interesting look at the horror genre as a whole. The characters are relatable and easy to root for. The story is clever and takes an intelligent look at the horror movie tropes, plus the twist at the end is perfect for the tone of the film. The gore/kills are haunting and very bloody. The weakness of the film is that only true horror fans will get all the references in the film. Cabin in the Woods (2012) gets 9/10 stars.
