Captain America: the First Avenger (2011) is set during World War II. The story is about Steve Rogers, played by Chris Evans, who is a short scrawny man that has been rejected by multiple military recruiting stations, while his friend Bucky Barnes, played by Sebastian Stan, Steve’s childhood friend is being sent to war. Steve Rodgers seems certain that his opportunity to serve his country will not be fulfilled until Steve meets Doctor Abraham Erskine. Doctor Erskine, played by Stanley Tucci, is a German scientist who has created a super soldier serum and has picked Steve to be part of his test group to find the right soldier to get the serum. While this is going on, Johann Schmidt aka Red Skull, played by Hugo Weaving, the leader of Hydra, Nazi science and weapons developers that are after the super soldier serum for their evil use. Steve is chosen and goes through the experiment. The experiment makes Steve taller, grow muscles, and makes him run faster than ever, but a hydra agent kills Doctor Erskine and takes the last of the super soldier serum. Steve stops the hydra agent, but the hydra agent kills himself before giving up any information and destroys the serum in the process. This leads to Steve becoming the character Captain America out to sell war bonds to the American people. Steve doesn’t feel like he’s truly meant just to be a dancing monkey and decides to go into action when he hears that his friend Bucky has been captured. There Steve rescues Bucky and the other captured soldiers and also meets the villain of the movie, the Red Skull. So Steve puts together a combat team and becomes the soldier known as Captain America.

Captain America: the First Avenger (2011) is different from many of the Marvel films and benefits from it. The characters are great and very relatable, especially Steve who has always been doubted, but still wants fights for his country. The acting is fantastic, especially the chemistry between Chris Evans and Sebastian Stan who truly feel like lifelong friends. The set design makes it look like the story is set during World War II and gives the overall feel of the 40s to the film. The Captain America shield and costume is terrific and makes the comic book character come to live. The weakness of the film is that it’s short on action and doesn’t take all the advantages of showing off Captain America’s shield. Captain America: the First Avenger (2011) gets 8.5/10 stars.
