Introduction

Both the Divergent series, and the Lunar Chronicles are fantastic books with traits that make each unique. The two are very comparable, however, one is significantly better.

Genres

These two series are in very similar genres, but Lunar Chronicles is also included in Fantasy because it has more elements that aren’t realistic. Divergent, if it had to be under one genre would fit as Dystopian, where Lunar Chronicles on the other hand works best with Science Fiction. If you have read Divergent, you would know all the characters are human, where in Lunar Chronicles it varies. Some like this difference and believe it makes for a more interesting book, but others might dislike it. The Lunar Chronicles is a basic retelling of many fairy tales, and many of the characters are based upon this. Other similarities are that both take place in the future, and are largely based on the corruption and unfairness in each world.

Which is better?

Divergent is more popular than the Lunar Chronicles and because it is now a movie, and has gained a lot of attention. I would definitely recommend the Lunar Chronicles if you liked the Divergent series because it is similar, but in my opinion has a better plot and storyline. Those that disliked the ending of Divergent will enjoy this series more. The only downside to the Lunar Chronicles is the pacing, which is slightly slow in some parts, but is made up by the fantastic story. The series, however, is more engaging because it covers topics outside of just the “real” world. The six book series, Lunar Chronicles, is definitely a series to read.
