Battle of the Sexes is a bio flick of the true story behind the 1973 tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs. The story is about Billie Jean King (played by Emma Stone) a female tennis player who leaves the Tennis Organization run by Jack Kramer (played by Bill Pullman) because their paying the female players less than the male players. So Billie along with her friend Gladys Heldman (played by Sarah Silverman) make an organization just for women tennis players to play tennis for equal pay. Bobby Riggs (played by Steve Carell) an ex male tennis champion sees this and wants a chance to take on the woman’s champion Margaret Court (played by Jessica McNamee). Margaret accepts and is sadly beaten by Riggs, which leads him to challenge any woman man enough to take him on one on one. Billie then steps up and takes on Bobby for womankind everywhere.
Battle of the Sexes deals with issues that are still strong today and shows what pressure Billie Jean went through representing women everywhere. The acting is terrific; Emma Stone shows the pressure of being a woman figure and Steve Carell shows Bobby as caring, competition, funny, but in the end his ego gets the best of him. The themes are very strong in the film about women being respected and getting their equal share. The weakness of the film is that the relationship between Billie and Marilyn Barnett (played by Andrea Riseborough) her hairdresser turned lover, wasn’t that developed and lacked chemistry. Battle of the Sexes gets 8/10 stars.
