A few weeks ago, with 21 new members of 53 total, Mrs. O’Hearn returning to coaching from a break last season, and three freshmen featured on the varsity team, the ladies 2016 tennis season ended. It was a season full of much growth from players in many ways, so even though the team didn’t perform as well as they have in the past (an overall dual score of 2-12, wins at Greenfield and St.Francis by Varsity), we can’t by any means call this season unsuccessful because of the fun late nights, bus rides, new friends made this season and immense growth.
The varsity’s performance is a sharp contrast to the junior varsity’s with an 8-1 winning season, the loss being at Oconomowoc. So many girls went out for tennis this season that Mr. Anderson and Mrs. O'Hearn decided that the JV team would to be split into 2 squads for practice times so that no cuts would have to be made.
Along with this unconventional decision, the “Slinger Tennis” banner donated by Don Thies, a long time supporter of Slinger Athletics and even a member of our SHS Athletic Hall of Fame, added to the crisp wind of change. It was donated early in the year (Thank you!) and was present for the boy’s tennis season, but was new for the girls.
On behalf of the SHS ladies tennis team of 2016, I would like to thank the coaches for an amazing season. If it weren’t for Mr.Anderson, Ms.Landt and Mrs.O’Hearn, this season wouldn’t have been possible, or even half as enjoyable and memorable as this season was.
